Preview - Sheffield Steelers v Nottingham Panthers - 25/01/14

Posted at 17:05 PM on 24/01/2014

Game 7 is one of those phrases in hockey circles that gets the heart racing, that is only compounded when the two teams in question are the Sheffield Steelers and the Nottingham Panthers. Ok this game 7 comes in the regular season, but like all the famous seventh games, the series is tied at 3-3 and victory in the game on Saturday could prove to be an important result as these two sides battle for second spot in both the Elite League and Conference tables. It also may provide the coaches a clear insight into the other club ahead of their meeting in the Challenge Cup semi finals next month.

These two teams are second and third in the Elite League and with three wins each in the 6 meetings this season, these two teams are very tightly matched. However the stats suggest that Nottingham have enjoyed the series to date, with both their powerplay and penalty kill proving more effective. They have outscored Sheffield, 7-4 in the first period and 11-2 in the final period, with the teams scoring 6 apiece in the second.

Matt Francis has been the leading scorer in the 6 games so far, his impressive stats of 7 goals and 2 assists lead all players and so the Steelers will have to find a way to nullify him. This weekend also sees the return of Panthers goaltender Craig Kowalski who has missed significant time through injury, he is a perfect 2 and 0 against Sheffield this term, but the fact he has not played since the end of October could have an impact on the American who turned 33 last week.

Sheffield have won the last two meetings between the two sides out scoring Nottingham 5-3. The key to success this season for the Steelers has been leading after the first period they have 14 wins and no defeats win they head in to the locker room in the lead at the first break. That record is 20-0 when leading after 2. In order to make that happen the Steelers powerplay will have to improve, it has only run at 7% in games between the two clubs this term.

After a season of frustrating injuries and suspensions the Steelers should be at full strength, with Lacroix pushing to start after his 1+1 in Dundee. The same cannot be said for Nottingham who have Grimaldi suspended and injury worries over Farmer, Lee, Werner and Murray. New signing Phil Oreskovic has arrived in the country, but won’t make his debut until Sunday.

The whole match is live on www.sheffieldsteelers.tv we will be on air from 645pm and I will be joined in the commentary box by former Panther and current Steeler Geoff Woolhouse with Jonathan Fearnley providing rinkside interviews from both teams at the end of periods as well as at the end of the game. During the second period break Steelers owner Tony Smith will be live to answer your questions, which you submit on twitter @steelerstvlive .
